Recently, Pamela, an English teacher from Longgao, has broken the boundaries of traditional classrooms with her ingenious immersive thematic situational teaching. She has deeply integrated the concept of interdisciplinary studies into English teaching. Through classes such as "clinic" role-playing, explanations of Tai Chi culture, and on-site learning at the Yichang Museum, she has created an interesting and profound learning experience for students. It ignited the enthusiasm of students for learning English.
In the "Clinic" role-playing class, students respectively transformed into doctors, nurses and patients. In realistic scenarios, students not only have to complete a series of professional dialogues such as consultation, diagnosis and dispensing of medicine in English, master professional terms in the medical field such as "symptom" and "prescription", but also exercise their emergency communication and problem-solving skills through role-playing. The integration of medical knowledge and the English language has made the originally obscure professional terms vivid and easy to remember, and the classroom is filled with laughter and joy.
The Tai Chi culture explanation class is a wonderful encounter of culture and language. Pamela first gave a detailed introduction to the origin, development and cultural connotation of Tai Chi, and then invited Kang Huigang, the teacher of the school's Tai Chi club, to demonstrate Tai Chi movements for the students. At the same time, she explained the basic movement essentials of Tai Chi in English. Through the practice of each move, the students experienced the charm of traditional Chinese culture, deepened their understanding of the cultural differences behind the English language, enhanced their cultural confidence, and achieved a clever integration of physical education, culture and the English subject.
The on-site learning classroom of Yichang Museum has extended the stage of learning to the big classroom of society. Inside the museum, students communicate and discuss the stories behind the cultural relics in English, ranging from the ancient Ba-Chu civilization to the urban development and changes of Yichang in modern times, experiencing the unique charm of their hometown in an English context. The knowledge of history is closely integrated with English language expression. Students not only broaden their horizons but also develop a love for their hometown, achieving an organic unity of interdisciplinary learning and social practice.
This series of immersive thematic teaching is Pamela's innovative exploration of interdisciplinary English teaching. Through diverse teaching forms, students learn while playing and apply what they have learned, and their comprehensive English literacy has been significantly improved. The students all expressed that such classes have aroused their strong interest in learning English and made them more confident in communicating in English. In the future, our school will continue to encourage teachers to carry out teaching innovation, create more high-quality interdisciplinary classrooms, and help students develop comprehensively.
